A Brave Heart in a Big Palace

Vikarna grew up in a magnificent palace. He spent his days learning how to use a bow and arrow, but he also spent a lot of time reading and listening to the wise elders. While his older brother, Duryodhana, wanted to be the most powerful king, Vikarna simply wanted to be a good person. Even though he was younger, Vikarna wasn't afraid to think for himself. He believed that being a prince meant protecting people and being fair to everyone, including his cousins, the Pandavas.

The Question No One Could Answer

One day, a very sad thing happened in the royal court. One of his brothers, Dushasana, tried to disrobe Princess Draupadi as part of a gambling game. All the powerful warriors and kings sat in silence, looking at the floor because they were afraid to speak up against the king. But not Vikarna! Even though he was just a young prince, he stood up in the middle of the crowded room. His voice didn't shake as he said, 'This is not right! We must be fair and kind.' He was the only one in his family who had the courage to say that what was happening was wrong. Even though he was worried his brothers might be angry, he knew that the truth was more important than being popular.

The Hero Who Listened to His Conscience

But Vikarna chose to fight on the side of the Kauravas as he felt loyal to his brothers and Hastinapur. Bhima killed him on the 14th day of the Mahabharat war because he was bound by his vow. He was the only Kaurava that the Pandavas shed tears for when he died.
