The Origin of Pushkar

One day, Lord Brahma saw a demon named Vajranabha harrasing people. So, he killed the demon with his lotus weapon. The lotus petals from the weapon fell on the ground.

Where they fell, three lakes were created. A city named Pushkar was established around those lakes.

Saraswati's Curse

One day, Lord Brahma decided to host a grand yagna (sacred fire ritual) in Pushkar. He needed his wife, Goddess Saraswati, to complete the ceremony. But she didn't arrive on time.

Brahma became impatient with the delay. The auspicious time was running out. He decided to marry another woman, Gayatri, to proceed with the yagna. When Saraswati arrived and saw this, she was furious.

She cursed Brahma, saying, "You shall be worshipped nowhere!"

Brahma's Worship in Pushkar

Later, she calmed down and decided to give a concession, "You can be worshipped but only here - in Pushkar."

This is why Pushkar, with its famous Brahma Temple, remains the sole pilgrimage site dedicated to Brahma. The lake in Pushkar is also considered sacred since it was created by Brahma himself.
