Listen to the Story
Uddhava the donkey loves to bray, believing he is a master singer. When he sneaks into a cucumber field at night with his jackal friend, his insistence on putting on a late-night concert brings some unwanted audience members.

A Midnight Feast
Uddhava the donkey worked hard during the day but was free to roam at night. He befriended a clever jackal, and together they discovered a lush cucumber field. Night after night, they would sneak in, gorge themselves on fresh cucumbers, and enjoy each other's company in the quiet fields.

The Musical Urge
One beautiful, moonlit night, full and happy, Uddhava declared that the perfect atmosphere called for a song. The jackal, alarmed, warned him: 'We are thieves in a field. Your voice is loud, and if the farmers wake up, we will be caught. Please, keep quiet.' But the stubborn donkey, offended that his talent was being questioned, refused to listen.

The Painful Applause
Seeing that the donkey was determined to sing, the jackal quickly ran to the edge of the field to keep watch. Uddhava threw back his head and began to bray loudly. The harsh sound instantly woke the sleeping farmers. They rushed out with heavy sticks, caught the donkey, and gave him a severe beating, tying a heavy mortar around his neck as a reminder of his foolishness.
