Listen to the Story
This is the story of how young prince Bheeshma took a lifetime vow for his father

The Prince Who Loved His Father
Long ago, there was a great prince named Devavrata. He was the son of King Shantanu and was known for being incredibly brave, kind, and wise. Everyone in the kingdom of Hastinapur loved him and knew that one day he would become a wonderful king. However, Devavrata noticed that his father, the King, was very sad. The King had fallen in love with a beautiful woman named Satyavati, but her father would not let them marry unless Satyavati’s future children—not Devavrata—became the next kings.

The Terrible Vow
Devavrata could not bear to see his father so unhappy. He went to Satyavati’s father and made a promise that shocked everyone. He said he would give up his right to be king so that Satyavati’s children could rule instead. But Satyavati's father was still worried that Devavrata’s own children might fight for the throne later. To make sure his father could be happy, Devavrata took a Bhishma Pratigya, which means a terrible and unbreakable vow. He promised that he would never marry or have a family of his own, ensuring there would never be any fight for the crown.

The Name of a Hero
Because of this huge sacrifice, the heavens showered flowers on him, and he was given a new name: Bheeshma, which means The One of the Terrible Vow. His father was so moved by his son's love that he gave Bheeshma a special magical power called Iccha Mrityu, which meant Bheeshma could choose exactly when he wanted to die. Even though he was never the king, Bheeshma became the 'Grandfather' of the whole kingdom, staying loyal and protecting his family for many, many years.
