Once upon a time, during the age of heroes and legends, there lived a young warrior named Barbarika. He was the grandson of the mighty Bhima and the son of Ghatotkacha. Barbarika wasn't just any warrior; he was incredibly kind-hearted and possessed a power that no one else in the world had.

Three Arrows and a Big Promise

Barbarika was a brilliant student of warfare, but he didn't care about fame or gold. His mother, Maurvi, taught him a very important lesson: 'Always help the side that is losing.' To help him follow this path, the gods gave him a special gift: three magic arrows. The first arrow could mark all the targets he wanted to destroy. The second arrow could mark all the things he wanted to save. The third arrow would destroy everything marked by the first arrow and then return to his quiver. With just these three arrows, Barbarika could end a whole war in a single minute! When the great Battle of Kurukshetra was about to begin, Barbarika decided to go and watch. He promised his mother that if he joined the fight, he would only help the side that was weaker.

The Test of the Peepal Tree

On his way to the battlefield, Barbarika met a wise traveler (who was actually Lord Krishna in disguise). Krishna wanted to test the young boy’s skills. He pointed to a giant Peepal tree with thousands of leaves and challenged Barbarika. 'If you are such a great archer, can you pierce every single leaf on this tree with just one arrow?' Krishna asked with a smile. Barbarika closed his eyes and released his first arrow. The arrow zipped through the air, marking every leaf on the tree. But Krishna secretly placed one leaf under his own foot to see what would happen. To his surprise, the arrow started hovering right above Krishna's foot! Barbarika bowed and said, 'Sir, please move your foot. There is a leaf under it, and my arrow must mark it to finish the job.' Krishna was amazed. He realized that Barbarika was so powerful that he could win the war for either side instantly.

The Greatest Sacrifice

Krishna explained a tricky problem to Barbarika. 'If you help the losing side, they will become the winning side. Then, the other side will become the 'losing' side, and you will have to switch over to help them. You would keep switching back and forth until everyone is gone!' Barbarika understood that his power was too dangerous for the world. To ensure peace and let the heroes finish their own battle, Barbarika made a brave choice. He gave up his chance to fight so that the world could find balance. However, he had one wish: he wanted to see the entire war. Krishna granted this by placing Barbarika’s head on top of a high hill. From there, Barbarika watched the whole battle with a peaceful heart, and today, he is remembered as Khatu Shyam, a hero who sacrificed everything for the greater good.

What We Learn

True strength is not just about having power; it is about having the wisdom and kindness to know when not to use it.
