Krishna and the Poisonous Snake
Listen to the Story
Did you know that a snake once poisoned the Yamuna river? Read this story to find out how Krishna taught him a lesson

The Poisoned Waters
One sunny day in Vrindavan, Krishna and his friends were playing by the Yamuna River, laughing and chasing their ball. But suddenly—plop! The ball rolled into the river and disappeared into the dark water.
“Oh no! The river is poisoned because of Kaliya Naag,” one of the boys cried. The water was black and bubbling, and no birds flew over it. Everyone knew that Kaliya, a giant, poisonous snake, lived deep inside, making the river dangerous.
The kids were scared and ran to fetch Krishna’s parents and the villagers. But Krishna just smiled. "Don't worry, I'll get the ball back!" And before anyone could stop him, he jumped into the river with a big splash!

Krishna Dances on Kaliya
Down in the river, Kaliya Naag saw Krishna and got very angry. "How dare you enter my river?" he hissed. With his long, slithery body, he wrapped Krishna tightly and squeezed hard.
Up on the shore, Krishna’s parents and friends saw the bubbling water and got worried. “Krishna is in trouble!” they cried.
But Krishna was not scared at all. With a twinkle in his eyes, he grew stronger and broke free. Then, he jumped onto Kaliya’s hood and began to dance!
Tap-tap-tap! Krishna’s tiny feet pressed down, making Kaliya weaker. The serpent thrashed and splashed, but Krishna danced faster and faster. The sky filled with music, and the river started turning clear again. All the villagers gathered on the riverbank, watching in awe.
Kaliya finally gave up. “Oh Krishna, please forgive me!” he begged.

Krishna Saves the River
Krishna stopped dancing and looked at Kaliya. “You have been very bad,” he said. “You made the river poisonous and scared everyone. That is why you are being punished. But I will give you another chance.”
Krishna told Kaliya to leave the river and never come back. Kaliya, feeling ashamed, promised to go far away with his family. As soon as he left, the water turned pure and fresh again.
Krishna’s friends cheered, “Hurray for Krishna!” The villagers hugged him, and the kids finally got their ball back. From that day on, the Yamuna River flowed clean and safe, and Krishna became the hero of Vrindavan once again!
